Start with the training you actually run
A training coordinator has an English Word document, 80 employees and two assessment periods each year. Some employees need practice before the assessment and a second attempt afterward. The coordinator needs a checked set of questions, a dependable participant list and a results file that can be used after the event.
That is the small-team scenario in this guide. A school with an existing learning management system, a business selling qualifications and someone studying privately may need different products. Start with the work you need to finish rather than a universal ranking of quiz tools.
We reviewed the official sources linked below on October 18, 2026. This is a shortlist based on public documentation. We have not run the same assessment through the three competitors' administration accounts, and make no measured claims about their speed, import accuracy or reliability.
Make a shortlist around the difficult part of your work
| Your main requirement | Candidate to investigate | What your trial should establish |
|---|---|---|
| Reusable tests, controlled access and occasional assessment sessions | ClassMarker | Prepare its import format, check assignment settings and obtain a quote for your expected attempts |
| Move existing Word/PDF questions into an assessment workflow | Testportal | Check the imported answers and question types against your actual document |
| Combine question imports, AI assistance and learner administration | ProProfs Quiz Maker | Separate import from generation, then check the selected plan's administration and reporting scope |
| Maintain your own reviewed bank for personal practice and team exams | Zhixu | Try the English sample, inspect candidates and publish a version before using it |
This table identifies starting points. It does not establish that one product lacks features listed beside another. If an existing tool already produces the right questions, roster and reports, retaining it may cost less work than moving.
Check how existing questions enter the system
ClassMarker documents CSV templates for different question types and updates using exported question IDs. If your source is Word, include preparation of the appropriate CSV in the trial. See its question import instructions.
Testportal describes importing questions from Word, PDF and plain text. Its documentation recommends checking the result and notes that source structure affects recognition. See Testportal's import guide.
ProProfs documents a structured Word import with a preview, alongside AI flows that can import existing questions or generate new questions from material. Those are different jobs: generated questions do not demonstrate faithful transfer of an existing answer key. See ProProfs Word import.
Zhixu uploads DOCX into candidates for review, then publishes an import and bank version. Its current document parser still needs literal Chinese answer markers even when the question content is English. The English pilot guide supplies an adapted file and explains that limitation. This preparation requirement belongs in your trial record.
Evaluate participation and evidence before extra features
Use two test participants to check invitations or credentials, the exam availability window, individual time limits, answer release and the result of a second attempt. Keep practice, scored assessments and retakes separate in your notes. They can have different identity and billing consequences.
Require an export containing the participant identifier your organization uses, the assessment identifier, submission status, score and the dates needed for your records. A downloadable spreadsheet is useful only if its rows can be reconciled with the actual participants. Ask what remains available after you cancel or service expires.
If certificates, monitored exams, an LMS integration or formal procurement documentation are mandatory, put them in the shortlist before comparing price. Do not buy a basic plan and assume it includes every advertised capability. ClassMarker's features, Testportal's business plans and ProProfs' Quiz Maker plans provide starting points for those checks. Zhixu's current offer is described on its pricing page; this guide does not promise equivalent certificates or monitoring.
Compare the billing unit for the same schedule
An organization member, an active quiz taker and a test attempt are different quantities. An 80-person roster does not tell you how many attempts a year will generate. Count practice runs, retakes and coordinator tests, and identify the months in which they happen.
For Zhixu, include the owner and administrators in organization capacity. The example has 81 members if its coordinator is the sole owner. Its short service plan covers a continuous period, so preparation and retakes must fit that period. An interface displayed in English does not change the actual currency or payment conditions.
Use the occasional training cost worksheet to compare units and terms. It preserves unanswered quote conditions rather than declaring a lowest-cost winner from unlike plans.
Finish one small pilot before moving a live bank
Use questions you own or the public synthetic English sample. Import a small subset first, check every answer, arrange one assessment and retrieve the results. Record the file preparation and corrections needed on each platform. Repeat the process if a required question format fails.
The workflow comparison provides common acceptance checks. The product guide explains personal practice and team use in Zhixu, while the AI workflow shows how explicit authorization and human review fit the pilot. Choose after the workflow and purchase conditions meet your needs.
